Entry & Visa Requirements for Tanzania

Everything You Need to Know Before You Arrive

Planning your Tanzanian adventure? Here’s your essential guide to entering the country — from visas to health precautions — to help you prepare for a smooth and stress-free arrival.

Visa Requirements

Most international travelers require a visa to enter Tanzania. There are two convenient ways to obtain it:

1. Apply Online (eVisa)

  • Visit the official portal: immigration.go.tz/visa

  • Submit your scanned passport, passport-size photo, travel itinerary, and payment

  • Processing time is typically 5–10 business days

  • Once approved, print the eVisa approval notice to present at immigration

2. Visa on Arrival

  • Available at major airports including Kilimanjaro (JRO), Dar es Salaam (DAR), and land border crossings

  • Visa fees must be paid in exact USD cash

  • Best for travelers from countries not eligible for the online visa

Visa-Exempt Countries

Citizens of select countries — such as Kenya, Uganda, and Namibia — do not require a visa for short visits.

Check the official exemption list for the most current information.

Passport Requirements

  • Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates

  • At least one blank page is required for visa stamps

  • Use the same passport for entry and exit if you hold dual citizenship

Health & Vaccination Guidelines

Yellow Fever Certificate

  • Required if you’re arriving from or transiting through a country with Yellow Fever risk

  • Must be shown upon arrival

Recommended Vaccinations

  • Hepatitis A & B

  • Typhoid

  • Tetanus/Diphtheria

  • Rabies (if visiting rural areas)

  • Malaria prophylaxis is recommended — consult your doctor prior to travel

COVID-19 Travel Policies

  • Vaccination is not currently required

  • Travelers may be screened on arrival

  • Stay informed with updates from Tanzania’s Ministry of Health or the World Health Organization

Travel Insurance

We highly recommend obtaining comprehensive travel insurance before your trip. It should include coverage for:

  • Emergency medical treatment

  • Trip cancellations or delays

  • Lost or stolen personal items

  • Emergency evacuation, especially if visiting remote areas

Upon Arrival in Tanzania

At the airport or border post, be prepared to show:

  • Your passport and visa/eVisa approval

  • Yellow fever certificate (if required)

  • Proof of accommodation or safari booking

  • Onward or return flight confirmation

Customs officers may ask about your trip’s purpose, so having a printed itinerary is helpful.
