Known as the “Whiskey Route”, Machame is Kilimanjaro’s most popular trail — famous for its dramatic landscapes and great acclimatization profile. This 7-day version maximizes your success while treating you to lush forests, giant heathers, rocky ridges, and glacier views — an unforgettable adventure from start to summit.

Your Trek Day Plan
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), meet your Serengeti Sphere Safaris driver and transfer to your lodge in Moshi/Arusha. Relax with a pool, Wi-Fi, and cozy rooms. In the evening, meet your mountain guide for a full briefing and final gear check.

Day 2 — Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Drive to Machame Gate (about 45–60 minutes). After registering, begin your trek through lush rainforest alive with birds and monkeys. The trail can be muddy but beautiful, winding under mossy trees. Reach Machame Camp by late afternoon where your crew will have set up camp and prepared a hot meal.

Distance: 11 km (6.8 miles)
Elevation: 1,800 m to 3,000 m
Day 3 — Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Wake up to clear mountain air and great views of Kibo Peak. Ascend a steep ridge out of the forest into heather and moorland. Walk along rocky paths and ridges before reaching the Shira Plateau. Arrive at Shira Camp in time for lunch and afternoon relaxation.

Elevation: 3,000 m to 3,840 m
Day 4 — Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
This is a crucial acclimatization day. Trek from Shira Camp up to Lava Tower at 4,630 m where you’ll rest and have lunch. Then descend into the scenic Barranco Valley, filled with giant senecio plants and amazing views of the Barranco Wall. Camp overnight at Barranco Camp.

Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
Elevation: 3,840 m up to 4,630 m, then down to 3,960 m
Day 5 — Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Start with an exciting climb up the Barranco Wall — a steep but non-technical scramble with panoramic views. Then follow a trail through ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp. Arrive in time for lunch and an optional acclimatization walk higher up and back down to camp.

Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles)
Elevation: 3,960 m to 4,035 m
Day 6 — Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
After breakfast, hike steadily upward through a stark alpine desert landscape. Arrive at Barafu Camp by midday for lunch and a final briefing. Rest, hydrate, and sleep early in preparation for the midnight summit push.

Distance: 4 km (2.5 miles)
Elevation: 4,035 m to 4,640 m
Day 7 — Summit Day: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Wake around midnight for hot tea and snacks, then begin the slow, steady climb up scree slopes to Stella Point (5,756 m). Watch a spectacular sunrise, then push on along the crater rim to reach Uhuru Peak — the roof of Africa! Descend carefully back to Barafu for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.
Trekking Time: 12–15 hours
Distance: 17 km (10.6 miles)
Elevation: 4,640 m to 5,895 m, then down to 3,100 m
Day 8 — Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, Return to Hotel
After breakfast, complete your final descent through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Celebrate with your crew, receive your summit certificate, and transfer back to your hotel for a warm shower and relaxation.

Day 9 — Departure
Relax at the hotel until your airport transfer. Check-out is at 11:00 AM. Late check-out can be arranged if needed.
