Mafia Island – The Hidden Marine Paradise
Overview
Tucked away in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, Mafia Island is one of Tanzania’s most spectacular and least-visited coastal gems. Part of the Mafia Archipelago and located southeast of Dar es Salaam, this island is a sanctuary for marine life, tranquil beach escapes, and untouched Swahili culture. Known for its exceptional diving, snorkeling, and seasonal whale shark encounters, Mafia offers a more off-the-beaten-path coastal experience compared to its sister island, Zanzibar.
A visit to Mafia is perfect for travelers seeking raw natural beauty, rich coral reefs, and meaningful interaction with local fishing communities.
