Overview

Nestled on the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika, Mahale Mountains National Park is one of Tanzania’s most magical and remote destinations. Accessible only by boat or light aircraft, Mahale is famed for its wild chimpanzee population, pristine rainforest, and dramatic mountain scenery. With no roads and minimal human presence, it offers a deeply immersive experience into nature at its purest.

Wildlife & Scenery

Mahale is one of the best places in the world to track wild chimpanzees. The park is home to over 1,000 chimpanzees, including the well-studied Mimikire group, which is habituated to human presence. Beyond primates, the forest is also home to:

• Red colobus, red-tailed monkeys, and blue monkeys.

• A variety of forest antelopes and warthogs.

• Over 350 bird species.

• Freshwater aquatic life and fish species unique to Lake Tanganyika.

The park’s scenery is stunning: lush green forests rise from the lakeshore up to 2,462-meter-high Mount Nkungwe, the highest peak in the Mahale range.
