Nyerere National Park (Selous Game Reserve)

Overview

Nyerere National Park is Africa’s largest protected wildlife area, spanning over 30,000 square kilometers. Located in southern Tanzania, this remote and untamed wilderness offers one of the most diverse safari experiences in the country. Named after Julius Nyerere, Tanzania’s founding father, the park was carved from the northern section of the former Selous Game Reserve. It remains a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its ecological value.

Wildlife & Scenery

This park is a stronghold for many species and supports one of the largest populations of African wild dogs in the world. You’ll also find:

  • Lions, leopards, and hyenas as apex predators.

  • Large herds of elephants and buffalos.

  • Hippos and crocodiles populating the Rufiji River and surrounding lakes.

  • Rare species like sable antelope, puku, and Lichtenstein’s hartebeest.

The landscape is rich and varied, encompassing miombo woodlands, riverine forests, and the mighty Rufiji River, which cuts through the heart of the park.
